More Must-Have Mac Utilities for the New User

Dec 31, 2008 Aaron Crocco

It's easy to feel like a fish out of water in OsX but these are more must-have free programs that make a Mac sing.

There are great utilities to make any Mac better and work better for its user. A previous list helped with the new Mac user. This time the focus is on five other utilities that are great to download. Apple ships iLife, a great suite of programs on all Macs but there are also great programs that everyone should download.

Doing more than just iLife

Apple's included software on the Mac is a suite of applications that lets its user get creative and organize their digital life. iPhoto gets those thousands of digital pictures under control and organized while iTunes is a fantastic jukebox.

The Mac has many other great programs to check out in the Applications folder once the computer is set up. Sometimes a computer needs a little more than what was shipped on it and that is where great utilities from the internet come into play. With some digging, small programs can be found that are ready to complete that missing task. Sometimes in a pinch, these small applications can save the day.

Get Ready to Pay Zero

Nothing is better than a program that does a great job. Even better is a program that does a great job and is free. If there are great programs out there for the Mac, this set is sure to please. These programs are all free and will make any Mac user more productive.

  • Transmission. This is the best BitTorrent client for OsX, which can be downloaded here.
  • VLC. This is a video player that plays almost every file out there. The player can be downloaded here.
  • NetNewsWire. This is a great RSS reader and makes reading all frequently visited sites go a lot faster. NetNewsWire can be found here.
  • UnRarX. Sometimes a file is downloaded that has an odd extension. One of these is a .rar file that is similar to a .zip. An easy way to open these up is to get UnRarX. This utility is quick and simple.
  • AppTrap. On a Mac, a program is deleted by just dragging it to the trash. That cleans up 95% of the program but small preference files and such get left behind. This program detects a deletion and searches for those leftover files and prompts to trash those files too.

This list should round out any Mac experience. Utilities on the Mac are nothing new but a gem may be found for that task that is just not easily accomplished without a little help.
