A Tutorial on Creating a POP3 Email Address for Linux GNOME Desktops

Learn how to set up POP3 personal and business email accounts in Evolution, an Ubuntu email management system for Linux (Ubuntu) GNOME desktops.

Evolution or Novell Evolution is to Ubuntu what Outlook is to Microsoft Windows. It is a contact manager, calender and address manager for Linux Gnome desktops. It is also serves well as a powerful, versatile email client. You can easily set up personal and business email accounts in this email management system for Linux GNOME desktops.

This tutorial will show you how to set up and configure a POP3 email address with the Evolution email client. You will have to have the Evolution Email utility already installed on your system

  1. Open the Evolution Email application. Click on the Forward button to continue.
  2. Backup your Evolution Email so that you can restore your accounts in the future if the need arises. To restore a previous configuration, mark the Restore Evolution from Backup file checkbox and then select the path where your file is. Click Forward again to continue.
  3. Personalize your account. Type in your name in the first field. Enter your email address in the second field. You can then chooseto have that email address is your default address. If it is, select the option labeled Mark this as my default account. You can then type in the address in which you want the other to reply. After doing this, you can type in the name of your company. Click Forward to continue.
  4. Configure the server settings. For the server type, you will need to select POP. This information is different with every provider, so check your provider's homepage for details.
  5. After that, fill in the configuration with the details of your provider. you will now need to make some server settings.
  6. Under Username, type in either your username or your email address. After that, go to the security section and then select I didn't choose any encryption methods. You will then need to select a way to protect your mail inbox. Passwords are the most common method. Click Forward to continue.
  7. Configure how often you want Evolution to check for any new messages. Select a time interval and then click Forward.
  8. Select SMTP as the server type and enter in all the server details. Click Forward to continue.
  9. Next, you need to give your account a name. Type in an account name and select Enter. Click Forward to continue.
  10. Select your time zone so as to ensure that your mails can have the correct time and date. Click Forward to continue.Click Apply at the very end to make all of your settings take effect.
