Best Websites for Free Computer SoftwareBefore Buying Computer Apps, Check Out These Free Sites
Whether for PC or Mac, commercial software for that new computer can quickly become expensive. These sites offer free apps for office, gaming, and more.
Typically new computers ship with a very basic suite of pre-installed software. While this includes fundamental programs such as email and an internet browser, it unfortunately does not include a fully-functional word processor, presentation application, spreadsheet, and other oft-used apps. Before rushing out to buy expensive software, check out these handy freeware websites. Google DocsThe internet search giant Google offers a totally free, web-based suite of office software called Docs. Gmail users can click the Documents link at the top left of the interface to go to the Docs home page. From there, simply click New to create a new word processing, spreadsheet, form, or presentation project. Users can’t write a book using these applications, but it’s definitely functional enough for daily personal and small business use. In addition to Docs, Google also offers a downloadable package of free software for Mac or PC called Pack. It’s a suite of fun and handy no-cost apps hand-picked by the search behemoth that includes web browsers, Adobe PDF reader, RealPlayer, spyware detectors, free chat and VOIP phone services, productivity applications, toolbars, and the company’s mesmerizing Earth. Requires Windows XP/Vista 7 or Mac OSX 10.5 Leopard. Cnet DownloadsCnet offers a wide variety of very cool freebies for Windows, Macintosh, Mobile, and Webware. Choose from a number of software categories including graphic design, audio/MP3, games, communications, business, and even iPod/iTunes. The site’s Home category is especially useful and includes apps for recipes, ringtone makers, and hobbies. Search by most popular, new release, and editor’s picks. ZDNet DownloadsZDNet bills itself as the web’s largest library of free software for PC or Mac. Choose from a wide variety of categories including communications, games, educational, business, home, internet, developer, MP3/audio, video, security, and much more. Some apps are totally no-cost while others are trial offers and for-purchase. TucowsThe original free software and shareware site on the web, Tucows is an internet service provider in addition to offering over 40,000 no-cost apps. Compatible operating systems include Windows, Mac, Linux, Mobile, and Web. Download free games, home, business, design, web authoring, and audio/video apps, then view video tutorials and web TV via Tucows' new Butterscotch site. OpenOffice and NeoOfficeThe venerable OpenOffice is the premier free open-source software application on the web. With a few exceptions, its applications such as the word processor are fully functional and can perform close to the standards of Microsoft Word. It saves files as .odt (open document text), but can be converted to almost any other format including .doc. Mac users may want to try NeoOffice which is designed with an attractive Macintosh aqua interface. Macintosh users may also want to take a look at Open Source Mac and Free Mac Ware, both sites of which contain some very cool no-cost applications. But clearly, those in both the PC and Mac camp will be surprised at and pleased with the things they can get at no cost to enhance their computing fun and productivity.
